Marumo Gallants were knocked out of the Caf Confederation Cup semi-final after losing 2-1 in the second leg and 4-1 on aggregate to Young Africans of Tanzania.

The Limpopo-based side lost the first leg away 2-0. “Young Africans did their homework very well, they were sitting back knowing that they have speed to rely on counter attacks,” said Marumo Gallants coach Raymond Mdaka after the match.

Young Africans broke the deadlock on the stroke of half-time courtesy of Fiston Mayele after a mistake by Ayanda Nkili.

Twelve minutes after the interval, Gallants thought they had pulled one back when Ranga Chivaviro headed in Lesiba Nku’s cross only to be ruled offside.

The visitors doubled the lead midway through the first half when Kennedy Musonda converted Mayele’s cross. Chivaviro managed to score on the 90th minute but it was a little too late.

“In the first minutes I thought we were able to manage the game until we conceded after giving our way a ball possession,” added Mdaka.

“The second one was also on the counter attack where they relied on the speed of their striker [Mayele].

“They realised the weakness in our defence in terms of speed. Other than that, I thought our boys played well. We had a number of chances that we could not convert but well done to Yanga. But we have done well by reaching this point of the competition.”
By Zola Doda

Sundowns have only won one league match against Richards Bay since they were crowned league champions on Saturday, 1 April.

This Masandawana drew 2-2 against Amazulu after leading 2-0. “I think we really played well [against Amazulu] and we were just unfortunate to concede the two goals in the second half,” said Maboe.

“We have another big one coming up on Saturday [against Marumo Gallants] and we are turning our focus on that game.

“Marumo Gallants have been doing well in the Caf Confederation Cup and in the league – they are a very good team not be taken lightly. We just drew a game [against Amazulu] and now we want to redeem ourselves. We will do our own home work and analysis and see what they have to offer.”

The match between Sundowns and Marumo Gallants was scheduled for Saturday, 13 May before it was brought forward to Saturday, 6 May due to Caf inter-club commitments.

Sundowns will play against Wydad Casablanca in the Caf Champions League semi-final while Marumo Gallants will take on Young Africans in the Caf Confederation Cup.

“Their striker, Ranga Chivaviro, has been doing well,” adds Maboe. “Lucky Mohomi has been popping up everywhere with assists. [Celimpilo] Ngema has been one of their outstanding players throughout the season.

They have pretty much have a decent team but like I said, we will do our own homework and analysis. And we will be well prepared on Saturday.”

Marumo Gallants coach, Raymond Mdaka, believes his side is ready for the Caf Confederation Cup quarter-final, second leg, clash against Pyramids FC from Egypt.

Gallants finished top of Group A before they were drawn against Pyramids FC. During the first leg played at the 30 June Stadium, Babina Noko took a 53rd minute lead through Ranga Chivaviro.

And the home equalised on the 90th minute to set up a mouth-watering second leg clash on Sunday, 30 April.

“We wanted to win so that when we come back home [for the second leg], we can have an easy game and progress to the semi-final,” said Mdaka.

“But we only managed a draw and we think we should have won. Other than that, it looked to be a very good game. We expect more when we play against them.

We don’t have any injuries other than the issue of travelling which we have been managing very well. The players are still OK.”

Despite competing in the Caf Confederation Cup, Marumo Gallants is still fighting relegation in the DStv Premiership.

Three days after the Caf Confederation Cup match against Pyramids, they will take on Maritzburg United.

“We don’t have to put ourselves under pressure and come up with special plans for the match against Maritzburg United. We know it’s in our programme and fixture, we just have to work on our boys to remain positive and maintain the same character that we had.”
By Zola Doda

Marumo Gallants drew 0-0 against Supersport United to earn a valuable point with less than five matches remaining before the end of the season.

The home side dominated the first half but it was the visitors who almost scored against the run of play on the 42nd minute – Jammie Webber played a perfect cross for Gampani Lungu and the Supersport United forward was denied by the upright.

In the 78th minute Bradley Grobler’s came close from scoring when he failed to connect Patrick Maswanganyi’s cross.

With eight minutes remaining on the clock, Supersport United were awarded a penalty when Lungu’s shot was handled by Ismael Toure inside the box.

Grobler stepped up and ballooned the penalty kick over the bar. With a minute remaining the home side had an opportunity to win the match but Ricardo Goss made an excellent save to deny Letsie Koapeng.

“It was a difficult game because of their style play,” said Marumo Gallants coach Raymond Mdaka after the match.

“Supersport United are good on set pieces and they play long balls, they wanted to catch us on counter [attacks]. We had to cover a bigger distance because of those long balls.

“That didn’t allow us to keep the ball on the ground and play like we normally do. But we are happy with a point – the boys did well under difficult conditions. A point will make a difference, we will try and fight until the end of the season.”
By Zola Doda

The Limpopo-based side are now unbeaten in the last six league matches with the last defeat against Orlando Pirates in January.

Chippa United took the lead on the 34th minute when Etiosa Ighodaro headed home Siphelele Luthuli’s corner kick to make the score 1-0.

Five minutes into the second half the home side were awarded a penalty when Katlego Otladisa was brought down inside the box. Ranga Chivaviro stepped up and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way with a clinical finish.

Three minutes later, Gallants were awarded a second penalty when Monde Mphambaniso was brought down inside the box by Motome Mathiame. Chivaviro made it 2-1 with his second penalty of the night.

On the 70th minute, Chivaviro completed his hattrick to make the score 3-1.

“Credit to the boys, they worked hard. Coming back from 1-0 to win 3-1 it’s not a simple thing,” said Gallants coach Raymond Mdaka after the match.

“We are happy as a technical team with the character that the boys are showing. It was a do or die match.

“It was not a game that we could afford to lose and they [Chippa United], did not want to lose. In the second half, with the way we played, we could have scored the fourth goal.”

We had to play along,” said Matsema.

“The guy [hotel owner] is very temperamental. When he asked: ‘did the chairman [Abram Sello] say anything about the payment’, when we said no – then we knew that day was not going to be nice.

“We were [staying] in a hotel but we didn’t have our freedom and that itself took a toll on us. I went nine solid days without sleeping. We arrived in South Africa last night and I still have the problem of not being able to sleep. But the chairman has arranged some professional help for and we will not be engaging in any football matters.”
