In a thrilling and contentious English Premier League clash, Tottenham Hotspur secured victory over a nine-man Liverpool side, thanks to Joel Matip’s own goal deep into stoppage time.

The Reds found themselves in a tough spot with two highly debated red cards. Curtis Jones was the first to see red, sent off after just 26 minutes for a challenge on Yves Bissouma, following a VAR review.

Shortly before halftime, substitute Diogo Jota joined him in the dressing room after receiving two quick bookings.

Amidst a game filled with controversy, Liverpool had what seemed to be a legitimate opening goal by Luis Diaz disallowed due to a questionable VAR decision.

The officials ruled Diaz offside without displaying the customary offside line graphics. The PGMOL later acknowledged a “significant human error” and deemed the decision to disallow Diaz’s goal as a “clear and obvious factual error”.

They expressed that VAR should have intervened but failed to do so, promising a “full review” to understand the lapse.

Captain Son Heung-min then put Spurs ahead with a well-taken goal, receiving a pass from Richarlison after an impressive move orchestrated by summer signing James Maddison.

However, Liverpool managed to level the score just before halftime, as Cody Gakpo netted the equalizer with a smart turn and finish from Virgil van Dijk’s header down.

Unfortunately, van Dijk sustained an injury during the act and didn’t return for the second half.
In the second half, Spurs had the better of the chances, with Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson making outstanding saves to keep his team in the game, denying Maddison and Son on multiple occasions.

It appeared that Liverpool’s resolute defense would secure them a hard-fought draw, but the dramatic climax was yet to unfold.

In the dying moments of the match, as Spurs launched a final attack, Joel Matip inadvertently directed Pedro Porro’s cross into his own net, leaving Alisson helpless.

This dramatic turn of events sparked jubilation and relief among the home supporters, handing Liverpool their first defeat of the season and preserving manager Ange Postecoglou’s unbeaten Premier League record.

Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, views winning six out of seven matches as a positive outcome, even in the wake of a defeat against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The champions’ perfect Premier League record was halted at Molineux, where Hwang Hee-chan netted a second-half winner, securing an unexpected victory for Wolves.

Guardiola, who was serving a one-match touchline ban and had to watch from the stands, couldn’t intervene as his team struggled to assert their usual dominance, and the prolific striker Erling Haaland had limited scoring opportunities.

Despite City’s 2-1 loss, Guardiola remained upbeat and chose to accentuate the positives while looking ahead to the upcoming clash with Arsenal.

The manager preferred to emphasize that the season is still in its early stages, even though they lost their flawless Premier League record at Molineux.

“Well, I’m pretty sure today we didn’t lose the Premier League and we didn’t win the Premier League, either,” said Pep.

“Six out of seven is nice. We could have done something we have never done before by winning seven in a row – we have our game, but the opponent played really, really good.

“They defended really well and they had the ability to keep it and drive and dribble forward. I told the team they (Wolves) came from being out of the Carabao Cup to lower league team – it’s happened and when you face this situation, its so much more difficult and I told them so.

“Today some details didn’t happen and maybe I apply bad some decisions.”

Manchester United manager, Erik ten Hag, has pointed out that it’s evident why his team suffered a home defeat against Crystal Palace in the English Premier League.

The Eagles managed to avenge their earlier Carabao Cup loss, with Joachim Andersen scoring from an infrequent goal attempt and effectively defending their lead as the Reds fell short in their efforts to equalize.

Ten Hag emphasized that the team’s decision-making in the final third was subpar, despite having some promising situations in both halves of the game.

“It’s a bad start,” said the Dutch manager. We have to catch up and do better. This is not good enough.

“Of course, it’s frustrating for everyone, especially the fans. It’s frustrating but for us, as well, the players and for me. We have to stay together, fight together and get better and make sure we get improvement.”

“I think every occasion is different. Sometimes it’s like calmness and composure, other times it’s be more clinical, other times be more direct. “The next time, play the extra pass. As I’ve said, it’s about decision making, the qualities and skillset the players have.

“There were many occasions, I can’t count them, but we are in the position to put the ball where we want to be. I think I repeat myself but we came into the positions and have to make the [correct] decision.

“Yes, these players can do better. We have more qualities than we showed today. Always, we learn from the game. We learn we are to do better in the final part of the game. The first goal is very important, if you concede it, you still have to win. You have to find a way to win and we didn’t, so we have to blame ourselves.”

Jude Bellingham netted his seventh goal of the season, propelling Real Madrid to the summit of LaLiga with a commanding triumph over high-flying Girona.

The opening goal materialized when Joselu expertly finished a sublime pass from Bellingham, with Aurelien Tchouameni nodding in the second for the visitors. Bellingham put the icing on the cake with a clever finish in the second half.

This victory propelled Madrid ahead of both Girona and Barcelona, the latter having defeated Sevilla earlier in the week.

Girona, the leaders at the start of the latest round of La Liga fixtures, began with great energy and created two prime opportunities to take the lead.

Yangel Herrera narrowly missed with a header from a central position in the box, while Viktor Tsygankov struck the outside of the post with a free header.

Gradually, Madrid found their rhythm and took the lead courtesy of a fantastic piece of skill from Bellingham, who skilfully set up Joselu with the outside of his right foot, allowing the former Stoke and Newcastle striker to finish with ease.

Tchouameni added Madrid’s second just four minutes later, capitalizing on a lack of marking from Toni Kroos’ in-swinging corner.

The home side came close to reducing the deficit early in the second half, but Kepa Arrizabalaga made a crucial save from David Lopez’s header, and Eric Garcia couldn’t convert the rebound.

Bellingham completed his brace with 20 minutes left on the clock, finding the far corner after Paulo Gazzaniga parried Joselu’s initial effort. Impressively, the 20-year-old became only the second player in the 21st century to score at least six goals in his first seven La Liga matches for Madrid, following in the footsteps of Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009.

The match ended on a sour note for the visitors as Nacho was sent off in added time for a reckless challenge on Portu, who had to leave the field on a stretcher.

Carlo Ancelotti’s squad will travel to Napoli for their second Champions League group match on Tuesday.

Kai Havertz opened his scoring account for Arsenal with a penalty, contributing to their comfortable victory over struggling Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium in the English Premier League.

Havertz, who has faced difficulties since his summer transfer from Chelsea, confidently converted Arsenal’s second penalty, securing their third consecutive away win.

The scoring began with Bukayo Saka, who netted by heading in the rebound from Gabriel Jesus’ shot. Martin Odegaard also joined the score sheet with a well-placed penalty, granting Mikel Arteta’s team a comfortable lead at halftime.

Arsenal’s dominance extended into the second half, culminating in Havertz’s goal. In added time, Ben White headed home from Odegaard’s free-kick, adding a touch of brilliance to their comprehensive victory.

Bournemouth, now under the management of Andoni Iraola, find themselves in the relegation zone after failing to secure a win in their first seven league matches.

Arsenal’s first notable attack of the game resulted in the opening goal, marking their return to winning form following a 2-2 draw against Tottenham the previous weekend.

Odegaard delivered a deep cross, which was headed against the bar by Jesus, and Saka was perfectly positioned to head in the rebound.

This goal put Bournemouth on the defensive against a team that had maintained an unbeaten record in their last 40 Premier League matches when scoring first, a streak that began in January 2022.

Bournemouth’s opportunities were limited in this largely one-sided contest. Dominic Solanke had a clear chance on goal, but William Saliba made a crucial interception to thwart the attempt. Ryan Christie had a shot just before halftime, but Arsenal’s goalkeeper, David Raya, collected it comfortably, securing his third clean sheet in four games.

Max Aarons fouled Eddie Nketiah in the box just before halftime, leading to a penalty. Saka, the usual penalty taker, entrusted the ball to Odegaard, who calmly slotted it into the bottom left corner after a hesitant run-up.

Christie’s challenge on Odegaard in the box resulted in Bournemouth conceding a second penalty, which Havertz confidently placed into the bottom left corner.

Substitute Emile Smith Rowe had a golden opportunity to add to the scoreline late in the game but narrowly missed from close range, while White concluded the scoring with his late header.

Bournemouth has only managed to score once in their four home league games this season, and that lone goal came in their season opener against West Ham back in August. The hosts posed little challenge to Arsenal, who secured a straightforward away victory.

The 23-year-old player voluntarily cooperated with Greater Manchester Police during an interview on Thursday, and no restrictions have been imposed on him afterward.

Manchester United has released the following statement regarding the Brazilian international. “Since allegations were first made in June, Antony has co-operated with police inquiries in both Brazil and the UK, and he continues to do so.

“As Antony’s employer, Manchester United has decided that he will resume training at Carrington, and be available for selection, while police inquiries proceed. This will be kept under review pending further developments in the case.

Ramos, who had returned to Spain following a two-year spell with Paris St-Germain, marked his 34th La Liga clash against Barcelona with an unfortunate own goal.

In a critical moment, the 37-year-old inadvertently redirected Lamine Yamal’s header into his own net.

Barcelona earned their victory in impressive fashion, with Joao Felix narrowly missing a scoring opportunity as he struck the underside of the crossbar during an exhilarating first half.

However, their triumph was marred by the early departure of Raphinha due to a hamstring injury in the first half, the sole drawback to a result that propelled them to the summit of La Liga, surpassing their neighbouring rivals, Girona.

Sevilla opted not to have any representatives in the VIP box as a protest against the ongoing corruption case involving Barcelona.

French Ligue 1 side, Olympique de Marseille, has officially appointed Gennaro Gattuso as their new head coach.

President Pablo Longoria has strategically selected Gattuso, the former coach of AC Milan, Napoli and Valencia, to step into the role previously occupied by Spaniard Marcelino.

Marcelino resigned from his position last week. The past week has been filled with high drama for Olympique de Marseille, culminating in a disheartening 4-0 defeat at the hands of their arch-rivals, Paris Saint-Germain, on Sunday night.

Sensing the pressing need for change, President Longoria promptly initiated the process of bringing in Gattuso.

Interestingly, Gattuso had come close to securing the Lyon coaching position, which ultimately went to his fellow countryman Fabio Gross.

Gattuso has inked a contract that will keep him at the helm until the end of the season. If Olympique de Marseille manages to secure a place in the top four and the coveted Champions League spots by the end of the season, an extension of one more season will be automatically triggered.

“I’m very happy and proud to be joining Olympique de Marseille,” the 45-year-old coach told the club’s website.

“It’s a club and a stadium, the Orange Velodrome, where I had the opportunity to play as a player, and which is famous throughout Europe for the passion and fervour it exudes.

“I can’t wait to get to work with my new squad and take on the challenges that lie ahead.”

Gattuso’s first challenge at the helm of the southern giants comes in the form of early-season pace-setters Monaco, whom OM take on in their Ligue 1 Round 7 clash at the Stade Louis II on Saturday night.

Claude Makelele has departed from his role at Chelsea, where he served as both a youth coach and a technical advisor.

The former French international embarked on his coaching journey back in May 2014, taking on the position of head coach for Ligue 2 side Bastia. However, his tenure at Bastia was short-lived, lasting less than half a year as he was relieved of his duties in November 2014, following a 1–0 loss to Guingamp on November 1st.

This decision stemmed from his inability to significantly impact the club in his coaching capacity.
Before his stint at Bastia, the 50-year-old former footballer served as an assistant coach at the French Ligue 1 outfit, Paris Saint-Germain, working alongside Paul Clement.

In January 2016, Makelele assumed the role of technical director at Monaco. Subsequently, in January 2017, he reunited with Clement as an assistant coach at the Premier League club Swansea City.

Following his time at Swansea City, Makelele took on the position of head coach at the Belgian club Eupen in November 2017.

His tenure with Eupen spanned nearly two full seasons before he made the decision to depart in August 2019.

He returned to his former club, Chelsea, to serve as a youth coach and provide his expertise as a technical mentor.

“After four fulfilling years, Chelsea and I decided, by mutual consent, that it’s time for me to seek a fresh, new challenge,” Makelele wrote on his official Twitter account.

“I do want to thank the fans for their affection. Blue will always be the color of my heart; I’ll share more once I’ve set my mind on the next chapter.”

Jose Mourinho reflects on the 4-1 loss to Genoa and acknowledges that this season has seen the worst start of his career.

The former Manchester United manager adds, however, that it also marks a historic achievement for Roma as they’ve managed to reach two consecutive European Finals. The Giallorossi have struggled in Serie A, securing just one victory in the entire season so far.

After six rounds, they currently sit in 16th place with only five points, placing them closer to the relegation zone than the European qualification spots.

This dismal start surpasses even the seven points he earned at Chelsea during the 2015-16 campaign.

“We started badly, that is true, the goal was an ugly one to concede. So was the one we conceded in the opening minutes in Verona,” continued Mourinho.

“There was a reaction, we equalised, but then immediately Diego Llorente got injured and the structure of the team changed, for the worse.

“With Mancini on a yellow card and the profile of this referee, we considered it right to take him off, so we changed the structure again.

“When our goal was ruled offside, we felt from the touchline that we were about to equalise, Genoa were sitting deep, we were dominating even without creating many great opportunities. Our changes were all attacking moves, but obviously at their third goal it was over.

“Sometimes it can become a total and utter disaster in these situations, conceding five or six. The fourth goal for me was out of the context of the game.”

Roma’s great strength last season was their defensive solidity, even when the goals were not flowing, but that seems to have been lost this year.

“It is true. I don’t want to say many things, but people talked about the Roger Ibanez errors that became almost iconic in the big games, but the truth is he gave us incredible solidity.

“We lost Chris Smalling, you can see how many games we won without Chris. When we are missing those players, we lack solidity.

“However, to say we lost the solidity because we are missing this or that player is not fair either. Solidity is also the consequence of team spirit and collective work to track back. We have lost some of that.

“At the moment, every shot we allow is a goal. That is nothing against Rui, it is just the situation we are seeing. Torino had a Duvan Zapata header in the first minute then never got near us until the equaliser on a throw-in.

“I feel this from the touchline and I imagine the players feel that anxiety on the pitch too.”
This is also the worst Roma start to a season in the three points for a win era.

“It is the worst of my career too. However, I also think it is the first time that Roma have played two European Finals in a row.”

Mourinho got increasingly irritable as the interview went on, especially when asked about the many injuries that Roma have been dealing with, losing Diego Llorente today.

“Did you ask Gilardino the same question, or just to those who lost the game? These are the consequences of the fixture list. They played 48 hours before we did and lost two players to muscular problems today.

“I think I saw yesterday five players went off with muscular problems in Serie A. Today Llorente is a player who has a history of muscular injuries, he played three games in a week, so it is not a huge surprise for me.”

Is this Roma squad strong enough to turn the situation around? “It is the squad we have and with this squad we must emerge from this situation. There is no more transfer window, nobody can leave or arrive, this is the group we have with its qualities and its problems.

“We have no time to cry. We can cry internally, because it hurts our heart, especially for me because of my rapport with the Roma fans. But tomorrow we will be back at work. The next game is worth three points, not seven or eight, but it becomes a very, very important match for us.”
