Orlando Pirates claimed a key victory ahead of next week’s Soweto Derby when they defeated Maritzburg United 2-1 at Orlando Stadium.
Monnapule Saleng opened the scoring for the Buccaneers on the stroke of half time with Terrence Dzukamanja netting the second midway through the second half. The visitors scored the consolation goal with five minutes remaining thanks to Tumelo Njoti,
After defeating All Stars 2-0 in the Nedbank Cup, the Buccaneers were back in action against relegation threatened Maritzburg United.
Jose Riveiro’s side dominated the early first few minutes but chances were few and far between.
With a few minutes remaining before the interval, Saleng brought the game to life when received the ball on right before cutting inside and curling the ball into the back of the net.
The home side doubled the lead on the 71st when Saleng’s free kick found Dzvukamanja to head the ball into the back of the net.
With five minutes remaining, hit a powerful shot into the back of the net from outside the box to make the score 2-1.
The victory moves the Buccaneers to third spot while Fadlu Davids remain in the danger zone.
