Orlando Pirates fell to a 1-0 defeat to Botswana’s Jwaneng Galaxy in the first leg of their CAF Champions League Second Preliminary Round tie played at Botswana National Stadium in Gaborone on Sunday.
Both teams had opportunities early in the game, with Thabang Sesinyi and Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo having chances within the first two minutes.
The hosts came close to scoring nine minutes into the game when Omaatla Kebatho narrowly missed a chance after a cross from Daniel Msendami.
Jwaneng Galaxy managed to break the deadlock 21 minutes into the game as Kitso Mangolo set up Daniel Msendami with a great pass, and Msendami scored with a single touch.
Orlando Pirates tried to equalize and had chances through Souaibou Marou and Innocent Maela, but they couldn’t find the target.
Opportunities were limited in the second half as Jwaneng Galaxy focused on defending their lead.
Jwaneng Galaxy found the back of the net again on the hour mark through Kitso Mangolo, but the goal was disallowed for offside.
Orlando Pirates continued to press for an equalizer, with Lesedi Kapinga and Kabelo Dlamini having attempts on goal.
Despite their efforts, Orlando Pirates couldn’t find the equalizer, and the match ended in a 1-0 defeat for them.
The result means that Orlando Pirates face an uphill battle in the second leg of the tie at Orlando Stadium, as they will need to overcome the deficit to advance to the group stage of the CAF Champions League.
