Riveiro aiming for Champions League

Orlando Pirates coach, Jose Riveiro, says his aim is to help The Buccaneers qualify for the Caf Champions League next season.

Third placed Orlando Pirates host Supersport United in the DStv Premiership and a win for The Buccaneers will reduce the gap to three points.

“We are happy after we managed to qualify to the next round [of the Nedbank Cup] and now we are looking forward to facing Supersport United and have the chance to reduce the distance in the table,” the Spanish mentor told journalists during the club media day.

“We are fully motivated and we are going to be more than prepared. Every game is going to be crucial for us.

“There are teams who are fighting relegation and the ones who are playing for top positions or possibility to play in Africa – it goes without saying that it’s very important for Pirates to find ourselves in that position at the end of the season.

“There are more teams fighting for the same opportunity to get three points.”

The match against Supersport United comes a week after Pirates played 120 minutes in the Nedbank Cup against Venda Football. But Riveiro believes that playing extra 30 minutes against the Motsepe Foundation Championship side will not be a disadvantage.

“We experienced a difficult moment [in the Nedbank Cup] but you measure the difficulties in terms of the level of opponents you have in front of you. We did it together and managed to solve it together.”
