Sundowns registers sixth consecutive win

Mamelodi Sundowns continued their impressive run in the 2023/24 DStv Premiership season with a 2-0 victory against Polokwane City, securing their sixth consecutive triumph.

The game started with high intensity, and within the first ten minutes, Polokwane City conceded a penalty, which was expertly converted by Lucas Ribeiro to give Mamelodi Sundowns an early lead.

In the twenty-third minute, Aubrey Modiba made a crucial interception, which started a sequence of play that involved Themba Zwane and Ribeiro.

This build-up led to a scoring opportunity for Neo Maema, but his shot missed the target, allowing Polokwane City to regain possession.

As the first half progressed, Maema managed to deliver a cross into the penalty box, which took an unexpected deflection off a defender.

Ribeiro attempted to capitalize on this opportunity, but he was flagged offside, nullifying the potential goal.

The first half concluded with Mamelodi Sundowns maintaining their 1-0 advantage over Polokwane City.

Sundowns extended their lead early in the second half. Just five minutes in, Ribeiro capitalized on a rebound from Zwane’s shot that had hit the post, slotting the ball into the back of the net. The goal marked Ribeiro’s second of the match and increased Sundowns’ lead to 2-0.

As the match entered its final fifteen minutes, Bathusi Aubaas initiated a throw-in, directing the ball to Maema, who then found Zwane. Zwane attempted a shot on goal to test the opposition’s defense, but his attempt sailed over the goalposts.

In the dying moments of the game, Maema and Lesiba Nku had their chances at goal, but unfortunately, their efforts went wide of the net.

A dramatic twist occurred as Maboe, who was making his second appearance for Mamelodi Sundowns in the season, was shown a red card for a foul on Thabang Matuludi, resulting in his ejection from the match.
