Bafana Bafana star, Percy Tau, says the reason why he left English Premier League club Brighton and Hove Albion for Al Ahly in 2021 is because he didn’t want to sit on the bench.
The 29-year-old joined Brighton from Mamelodi Sundowns in 2018. In an interview with Mozzart Sport, Tau revealed the reason why he left England for Egypt.
“I just wanted to play football,” the player said. “I didn’t want to sit on the bench and wait for an opportunity regardless of where I was playing. All I wanted was to play football and be happy doing it again.”
“I’m optimistic for next season, and I hope everything goes to plan,” he said. “I always make sure to get onto the pitch with my left-foot because I primarily use it.”
Tau joined Al Ahly in 2021 under Pitso Mosimane. Following Mosimane’s departure, the forward went through ups and downs before experiencing a change in fortune under Marcel Koller.
“I have a contract with Al Ahly until June 2025,” he adds. “We won five trophies last year and we’ll try to do it again this year. I’m happy to be competing for major trophies, Al Ahly is a big club that always tries to win.
“It doesn’t matter what you won the previous season, in the new season you have to do it all again.”
