Riveiro: We gave advantage to our opponents

Orlando Pirates coach, Jose Riveiro, says his team was the best in the first half of the season but couldn’t maintain the same level of performance required to win the league.

The Buccaneers are currently on position three on the table and out of contention for the league title rice.

“We are so far behind in terms of points and we have to accept that they [Sundowns] are doing an excellent job,” Riveiro said ahead of the league match against Supersport United.

“I think they have won 19 games in the league and that is an excellent record. When we do our own analysis, it’s not my role to analyse why Sundowns are getting those results. I can say that I know why we are behind and there are multiple reasons for that.

“There was a period when we couldn’t manage to get the average of points that Pirates is supposed to get. There was a time in the first part of the season when we were the best, winning the MTN8 trophy. But we couldn’t maintain the same level of performance the league.

“And during that period, we gave an advantage to our opponents that we couldn’t recover any more. That’s a fact. But we know the reasons and we are working on it. And right now we are focussing in the challenges that we have ahead of us which is to get that second position badly.

“[Finishing second on the log] is the maximum that we can achieve this season. At the end of the season, we will analyse the ways in which we can reduce the gap.”
