Gallants earn a valuable point against Supersport

Marumo Gallants drew 0-0 against Supersport United to earn a valuable point with less than five matches remaining before the end of the season.

The home side dominated the first half but it was the visitors who almost scored against the run of play on the 42nd minute – Jammie Webber played a perfect cross for Gampani Lungu and the Supersport United forward was denied by the upright.

In the 78th minute Bradley Grobler’s came close from scoring when he failed to connect Patrick Maswanganyi’s cross.

With eight minutes remaining on the clock, Supersport United were awarded a penalty when Lungu’s shot was handled by Ismael Toure inside the box.

Grobler stepped up and ballooned the penalty kick over the bar. With a minute remaining the home side had an opportunity to win the match but Ricardo Goss made an excellent save to deny Letsie Koapeng.

“It was a difficult game because of their style play,” said Marumo Gallants coach Raymond Mdaka after the match.

“Supersport United are good on set pieces and they play long balls, they wanted to catch us on counter [attacks]. We had to cover a bigger distance because of those long balls.

“That didn’t allow us to keep the ball on the ground and play like we normally do. But we are happy with a point – the boys did well under difficult conditions. A point will make a difference, we will try and fight until the end of the season.”
